Miami Lighthouse for the Blind

On May 30th, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind hosted a LGBT Fair celebrating diversity. This event invited the community to get vision screenings and low vision evaluations, HIV/STD testing, private pharmacy consultations, legal Q&A and information from community health and social service organizations.

Florida State Representative David Richardson welcomed participants and Dr. Steven Santiago, Medical Director of Care Resource, gave the keynote address on ‘The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in South Florida.’

According to Santiago, “Care Resource is proud of its historic commitment to provide services that are sensitive to the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Since our founding 30 years ago, Care Resource’s services have promoted awareness, provided support for physical and mental health, and have been delivered with a supportive and culturally sensitive environment.”

The Fair also celebrated diversity with musical performances by the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus and the Miami Lighthouse Musicians. Complimentary workshops, activities giveaways and demos that include health oriented sessions, such as, barre yoga and more.

“The Fair could not be held at a better time, as research suggests that some subgroups of the LGBT community have more chronic conditions as well as higher prevalence and earlier onset of disabilities which in some cases leads to vision loss. The fair will not only address these health concerns but it will address them in a fun and exciting way emphasizing happy and healthy living.” – Virginia Jacko, President & CEO of Miami Lighthouse.
