Something to Chew On

How can we hand over the right size of food items?

  • If it fits in the palm of your hand, it is a 2 – 3 ounce size of cooked meat
  • If it can fit from the top of your wrist to the tip if your middle finger, it is a 3 ounce size cooked fish.
  • If it can lay on your thumb and extend to the bottom or your hand that is the size of a 3 ounce chicken leg.
  • If it can cover your thumb, it is the size of 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • Cup your hand and if it does not fall out that is the size of a ½ cup of rice or potato
  • The first notch of your thumb is an ounce of cheese and butter
  • Place your index and middle finger together. Measuring from the tip to the bottom of your hand, is the length of a plantain cut in half.
  • How much is too much gravy? If you have to act like Moses who parted the Red Sea, that is too much.

Something to Chew On is a quarterly program designed to give you nutritional tidbits to satisfy your appetite, nourish your mind, fill your soul and wet your whistle.
