National Gay Mens HIV-AIDS Awareness Day

As homosexual and bisexual men are more severely affected by HIV/AIDS than any other group in the United States, September 27th has been designated as National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2013 in the United States, gay and bisexual men accounted for 65% of the 47,352 estimated HIV diagnoses among all people receiving an HIV diagnosis that year. In the same year, gay and bisexual men accounted for 55% of the estimated number of persons diagnosed with AIDS among all adults and adolescents in the United States.

While HIV care remains a large part of Care Resource’s focus, we have made significant strides in championing the importance of HIV prevention. In this regard, we have begun to offer Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) management services to eligible patients. PrEP is a prevention option for people who are at high risk of getting HIV. It’s meant to be used consistently, as a pill taken every day, and to be used with other prevention options such as condoms.

To observe National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Care Resource created an online quiz about PrEP. When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection in people who are at high risk by up to 92%, according to the CDC. Recent studies indicate it could actually be higher.

Take this quick PrEP quiz and learn more about PrEP. Anyone who receives 100% will be automatically entered into a raffle to win 2 general admission tickets to Care Resource’s Muscle Beach Party – the Sexiest Dance Party on the Sand on Sunday, November 29 from 1:00pm – 8:00pm in Miami Beach right off of 12th Street.

If you would like to find out the answers to these questions, or learn more about PrEP, please contact Paul Seligmann, Health Promotion Peer Navigator with Care Resource at 305.576.1234 x 306.
