What is KYS²?

Know Your Status, Know Your Self…

This is an initiative to give you tools to take action and gain knowledge; that will help you learn, love, and live in the best ways to stay healthy and happy.

Knowing your HIV status, negative or positive, allows you to make informed decisions about how to live your life and be in control of your choices.

Get tested, learn your status, and move forward with confidence.

Am I at risk for HIV?

If you have had unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive or who doesn’t know their status, then you are at risk for acquiring HIV and/or other Sexually Transmitted Diseases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men account for 63% of new infections despite making up only 2% of the population and South Florida has the highest rates of new infections in the country.

Time to get tested? What are my options?

The CDC recommends frequent HIV testing (every 3 to 6 months) for sexually active gay and bisexual men, people who inject drugs, or people with multiple sex partners. Here are the ways you can get tested for HIV:

At One of Our Locations: we have regular testing sites Monday through Saturday using our mobile units throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, as well as in our main offices. See the days and times here:

Your Time, Your Location (for eligible* clients): we can meet you somewhere at your convenience (as determined by our ground rules below) where you might be more comfortable getting tested, alone or as a group. Just call 305-576-1234 ext. 412 or email for appointment and information.

* How do I know if I am eligible to select my time and location?

If you are a man between the ages of 18 and 29, who has sex with other men and does not always use protection, you may be a candidate for a more in-depth testing and counseling experience, referral to free services, and a monetary incentive (eligibility determined by counselor). At the end of this single counseling session, you will have the tools to better manage your current status and move forward with confidence.

Ground Rules if at your location:

  • Safe, substance-free environment: coffee shop, library, restaurant, Pridelines Youth Services or any Care Resource office, a house or apartment (two counselors will be present if private residence)
  • No testing done on anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • All testing and personal information is confidential. Confidentiality agreement will be signed between all parties in a group setting, no pictures or social media allowed.
  • Testing can end at any time if either party does not want to continue

What if I know my current status and I am negative?

In order to stay negative for both HIV as well as other sexually transmitted diseases, you need to fully commit to being safe. Remember that your HIV test expires every time you have risky sex. Get tested twice a year. Understand the meaning and limitations of your testing technology. Know what increases your risk of HIV and other diseases. Talk to people, use your resources, and always use a condom. You’re not only protecting yourself, but you’re protecting others as well.

Remember that we offer free HIV and STD testing at our main offices at 3510 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL and 871 W Oakland Park Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. An extensive list of our testing locations can be accessed at the following link:
