In The Quest for a Cure…
CARE RESOURCE has been actively involved in the quest to find a cure for HIV/AIDS since 1990. These endeavors have involved working hand in hand with the Pharmaceutical industry as well as partnerships with community-based clinics throughout the State of Florida. [Since 1990, Care Resource has been involved in over 70 phase II and III clinical trials, which have supported FDA approval of 17 drugs for the treatment of HIV.]
This work has allowed Healthcare Providers to make great strides towards helping HIV positive persons to live healthier lives. However, we are entering the third decade of the AIDS pandemic and a cure has still not been found. Treatments have enabled people with the disease to live longer, however people still practice risky behaviors in the knowledge that these behaviors put others at risk, and so the spread continues to infiltrate new areas of the population.
Longevity of life has lead to complacency over the way in which we view the disease. Our mission to ensure that people are better informed about the potentially devastating implications is far form being at an end.
At CARE RESOURCE, our team of Clinical Research Professionals are dedicated to continuing the fight to find a cure.
The Value of Clinical Trials…
“A Cure Has Still Not Been Found”
The Quest For a Cure
This very statement evokes the reason for continuing to undertake work in the area of clinical research. Although HIV positive persons are today living longer and healthier lives due to greater access to treatments, there are still a number of issues, which demand the continuation of clinical research. Many persons on long-term treatments have developed resistance to these medications as a result of mutations of the virus, which require new treatments. This has meant that for many long-term patients, treatment options are becoming fewer. Treatments are also very aggressive and patients often react violently to these highly toxic medications. It is important that research in to the development of medications with less toxic side effects continues. This will ensure that new drugs are not only effective, but also safe. Another major problem with HIV treatments is that they typically require the patient to take a large number of pills, which are required to be taken under a strict regime. Many patients find reconciling these “complex cocktails” of drugs with their busy life styles extremely difficult. Adherence and compliance to your medication regime can mean the difference between survival and death. The Pharmaceutical industry has recognized this and is striving to ensure that reduction of pill numbers is a crucial consideration when developing new drug therapies for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
Is a Clinical Trial Right For Me?
Before embarking on a clinical trial there are some important considerations that you need to explore, to ensure that you make the right choice. Participating in a clinical trial does not come without some risks. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the risks and benefits of participating in a trial, by talking to your doctor, our research staff and others who have participated in clinical trials. We also advise that you discuss this with your partner, family members and others with whom you share close relationships. You will benefit from their emotional and practical support if they have a good understanding of your treatment regime and the associated implications.
The Risks
- Experimental treatments do not guarantee effectiveness.
- The medication may cause unpleasant side effects, which you need to be aware of, in view of the fact that you will have to manage these within your daily living.
However, there are some very significant benefits to joining a trial, if you find one that is right for you.
- You will benefit from gaining access to medications that are not as yet FDA approved.
- This may result in lowering your viral load and raising your T-cell count and improving your health.
- As well as receiving care from your Primary Care Doctor, you will also be looked after by an experienced team of research staff. This extended HIV team will ensure that you will receive regular and comprehensive medical and emotional care while you participate in a trial.
Your participation in a trial means invaluable support for the development of a cure and a possible end for the fight to eradicate HIV and HIV related infections.
