Care Resource is proud to present the 25th Anniversary of AIDS Walk Miami: One Step Closer to a Cure on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Miami, FL (April 12, 2013) - Care Resource is proud to present the 25th Annual AIDS Walk Miami: One Step Closer to a Cure on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the Miami BeachConvention Center.

For this year’s 25th anniversary walk, Robert C. Gallo, MD, the eminent scientist who became world famous in 1984 when he co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS, will serve as the Grand Marshal.

The 25th Annual AIDS Walk Miami is a 5K (3.1 miles) walk-a-thon fundraiser benefiting Care Resource and the Food for Life Network. All funds raised from AIDS Walk Miami are used in Miami-Dade and Broward to help our diverse communities in need. HIV care and treatment is becoming increasingly effective but new HIV infection rates in Miami-Dade and Broward still rank the highest in the nation. With recent cuts in federal funding, many people living with HIV/AIDS in our community simply can not afford medical care and treatment and need our help.

AIDS Walk Miami is one of the oldest and largest AIDS walks in the country. This annual fundraiser helps make it possible for Care Resource to:

Serve over 18,000 client encounters.

Deliver over 40,000 meals to home-bound clients.

Perform over 12,000 free HIV and STD screenings per year.

Add dental, pediatrics, nutrition, substance abuse and mental health counseling to Care Resources’ list of services.

The Walk starts outside the Miami BeachConvention Center and ends at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. Registration begins at 8:00am. The walk begins promptly at 9:00am.

If you have not already registered, please register online today at aidswalkmiami.org and begin your efforts to help those who truly need.

ABOUT DR ROBERT C. GALLO, MD

Robert C. Gallo, MD, is the eminent scientist who became world famous in 1984 when he co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS. Little was known then of the mysterious disease that was fast becoming the deadliest in medical history. Since, Dr. Gallo has spent much of his career trying to put an end to this raging epidemic and other viral, chronic illnesses.

Though best known for his co-discovery of HIV, Gallo and his team pioneered the development of the HIV blood test, which enabled health care workers for the first time to screen for the AIDS virus – leading to a more rapid diagnosis while simultaneously protecting patients receiving blood transfusions. His research also helped physicians develop HIV therapies to prolong the lives of those infected with the virus. In 1996, his discovery that a natural compound known as chemokines can block HIV and halt the progression of AIDS was hailed byScience as one of that year’s most important scientific breakthroughs. For more information please visit http://www.ihv.org/about/robert_gallo.html.
