SPOTLIGHT ON: RICHARD MILSTEIN
A TOP
INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISER FOR 21 YEARS
"Every year I say
the same thing: I hope this is the last year I have to walk." –
Richard Milstein
Care Resource would like to take the time to recognize Richard Milstein
for his continued generosity and support of AIDS Walk Miami.
Richard is our top fundraiser and a member of the Akerman Walk Team. It
is his 21st year participating in the Walk and Richard hopes that very
soon the epidemic of HIV/AIDS can be a thing of the past.
Twenty-one years
ago, Richard became involved with AIDS Walk Miami through his friend
Gary Keating (former director of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus and
educator) and his partner, Richard Schultz. At that time AIDS was at
its height—decimating the gay and cultural communities. Now that
HIV/AIDS is no longer a “gay disease,” Richard Milstein is not
stopping. He knows that AIDS is affecting minority communities, whose
voices are not always heard. Richard walks for everyone. With awareness
continuing to grow for those in the gay community, Richard noted that
he would like the system educated in such a way that gay males, who
practice safe sex, may donate blood and marrow—the same as anyone else.
A graduate of University of Miami’s School of Law, Mr. Milstein handles
high conflict, complex and high profile guardianship, trust, and
probate matters, as well as being a Certified Mediator and participant
in the first American Bar Association pilot project for Mediation.
Among Mr. Milstein’s numerous awards, he has been inducted into the
Miami-Dade College Hall of Fame, earned the Miami Herald Humanitarian
Award through his work with the LGBT National Task Force and Spirit of
Liberty Award from the People, along with being recognized in South
Florida Business Journal as “Best in the Bar.” Richard Milstein and
Eric Hankin were legally married in Iowa on March 12, 2010 and have
been together now for 10 years.

on the day of the event, don't forget to thank him for all his tireless
support in the fight to end HIV/AIDS in our South Florida communities.

JOIN THE SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE
AT THE
24TH ANNUAL AIDS WALK MIAMI
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a leading-edge
Order of queer nuns. Since their first appearance in San Francisco on
Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted themselves to community
service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting
human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. They
believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty
and they use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry,
complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.
The Sisters have grown throughout the U.S. and are currently organized
as an international network of orders, which are mostly non-profit
charity organizations that raise money for AIDS, LGBT-related causes,
and mainstream community service organizations, while promoting safer
sex and educating others about the harmful effects of drug use and
other risky behaviors. In San Francisco alone where they continue to be
the most active, between 1979 and 2007 the Sisters are credited with
raising over $1 million for various causes.
Their Mission Statement here in South Florida is "To encourage
self-expression and diversity, engender acceptance, foster tolerance,
and educate those within and outside of the LGBT Community by promoting
love and laughter through community services and fund raising, but
ultimately setting the example that to sin is human, but to indulge
without shame is divine."
Come support AIDS Walk Miami and see The Sisters of Perpetual
Indulgence in action. They will be helping Care Resource with
everything from route monitoring to greeting at AIDS Walk Miami. This
will be a perfect photo opportunity for all attendees.
