Educating the community about PrEp and TransHealth

On Tuesday, June 23rd, from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at the Pride Center located on 2040 N Dixie Hwy in Wilton Manors, FL – the Pride Center’s Dr. Robert Shore and Care Resource’s Dr. Scott Hall provided the audience with the Facts 101 on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and how it pertains to the Transgender community.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a way for people who do not have HIV but who are at substantial risk of getting it to prevent HIV infection by taking a pill every day. The pill (brand name Truvada) contains two medicines (tenofovir and emtricitabine) that are used in combination with other medicines to treat HIV. When someone is exposed to HIV through sex or injection drug use, these medicines can work to keep the virus from establishing a permanent infection.

According to Hall, “The Centers for Disease Control announced that transgender women are at high risk for HIV infection. In addition, by race/ethnicity, black/African American transgender women have the highest percentage of new HIV-positive test results. Therefore it is important for this community to learn about Prep so as to decrease the amount of new infections.”

A 2009 report from the National Institutes of Health found that nearly a third of transgender Americans are HIV-positive. The study also indicated that many transgender women may not know their HIV status, due to a series of cultural, social, and economic barriers. ‘

This presentation is part of the Community Collaborative Transgender Series, a collaborative effort of T-House, the Florida Department of Health in Broward County and the Pride Center.
