Medical Director Steven Santiago, M.D.
Dr.
Santiago was
born and raised in New York City. He
received his B.S. at City College of New York and his M.D. from the
nearby State University of New York at Stony Brook Medical School. He
did his residency in Family Practice at the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New
Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Santiago became Board Certified in Family
Practice in 1994 and was appointed as a Fellow of the American Academy
of Family Physicians in 1998.
Dr. Santiago has been the Medical Director at Care Resource, South
Florida's largest non-profit AIDS service organization, since
2003. Care Resource uses a
unique "total care" approach, including working with affected
communities to create and/or implement prevention strategies, community
outreach and initiatives, testing, medical care, and protocols, as well
as individual and family counseling
and support services. This wide array of programs
collectively strives to respond to every area of need of the HIV
at-risk and infected communities. In addition, he directs the research
program at Care Resource and he functions as principal investigator for
numerous pharmaceutical and government sponsored HIV-related clinical
trials.
Dr. Santiago has been an active member of the HIV education community, speaking frequently on
numerous topics to patient groups and also to physicians and allied
health professionals. |

Luis Saenz, D.O.
Dr. Saenz was born in Nicaragua and has lived in South Florida since 1983. He feels fortunate to have been able to see Miami grow into the exciting cosmopolitan city it has become. He received his B.S. Physical Therapy degree from Florida International University and graduated from Nova Southeastern University, with a degree of Doctor of Osteopathy in 2002. Dr. Saenz is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is accredited as an HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. He has been involved in clinical research since he became a physician. Dr. Saenz enjoys the opportunity to work in South Florida’s multicultural community and is looking forward to providing you with excellent service.

Robert B. Heglar, M.D.
Dr.
Heglar joined our family full-time at Care Resource in June 2005
and trained in New York City at Montefiore Hospital after attending
Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Prior to entering medical
school, Dr. Heglar was an international and environmental lawyer in
Washington, DC. He became interested in HIV medicine while doing
volunteer work with the Whitman-Walker Clinic in DC and has worked
directly in the HIV/AIDS community ever since. Dr. Heglar is board
certified in family practice and accredited as an HIV specialist by the
American Academy of HIV Medicine. He is the principal investigator for
a number of clinical trials and is active in community education
efforts.

Michael Cuenca, M.D.
Dr.
Cuenca joined Care Resource in April 2006 and in his previous 3 years
(from 2003-2006) Dr. Cuenca was the Medical Director of Community
Health Care Center/One and Principal Investigator for a number of
on-going studies since 2001. Currently he has 12 clinical trials.
Previously he was the Medical Director of Clinic St. Christopher. He
finished the Residency Program in Internal Medicine at Montefiore
Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1999 where he
served as Chief Resident. This is where he received the inspiration to
to take up HIV Medicine during the crucial period of 1996-1999 when
AIDS changed from a grave and terminal illness to a chronic and
manageable disease.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and
Certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine since 2003. He was
born in the Philippines and grew up in Rhinebeck New York.

Toye Helena Brewer, M.D.
Toye Helena Brewer is currently Medical Officer and Epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of STD Prevention Florida Field Unit. Dr. Brewer earned her M.D. Degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine, completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington in Seattle. She was a faculty member at the University of Miami Division of Infectious Diseases for over 8 years where her responsibilities included both inpatient and outpatient HIV care. As a U.M. faculty member Dr. Brewer developed the University of Miami – Miami Dade County Health Department STD Clinic collaboration and was Medical Director of the STD Program for five years. She has conducted STD related research as well as research on crack cocaine addiction and HIV. She is currently engaged in research on the syphilis epidemic in Florida.

Aparajita Mishra, M.D.
Dr. Aparajita Mishra was born and raised in eastern India. After obtaining her medical degree at The Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati Medical College & Hospital she came to the United States. Dr. Mishra completed her family medicine residency from Fairview Hospital, Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and is Board Certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Mishra now resides in South Florida and currently provides primary care to South Florida’s diverse communities.
