The HIV
virus is increasingly affecting communities of
color, black/African-American in particular. About 50% of all persons
living
with HIV/AIDS are found in the black/African-American communities of Miami-Dade County. It’s also estimated that
about
1/3 of all HIV infected persons in the county are unaware of their HIV
infection.
The African-American Testing Initiative is the
Florida
Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS, response to address this
epidemic in
the black/African-American communities. Care Resource’s
African-American
Testing Initiative is a mobile-based HIV CTR project designed to
provide HIV
counseling and testing to undiagnosed and high-risk
black-African-American
persons and link them to HIV and other support services.
Communities that are targeted include areas
identified as
high HIV prevalence communities by the Miami-Dade County Surveillance
unit of
the Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS. They are, among others,
zip codes
33127, 33142, 33054, 33147, 33136, and 33161. This
program is funded by the Florida
Department of Health, Bureau of
HIV/AIDS.
