September is Healthy Aging Month here at Care Resource. This is the perfect opportunity to celebrate since it is the time when many people think about beginning new tasks after the summer.

In support of this month, Care Resource is offering free wellness screenings to new clients over the age of 45 without private or government insurance. This promotion includes screenings for diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure. To redeem this promotion, one MUST first make an appointment. To make an appointment, please call 305-576-1234 EXT: 470 (English) and 471 (Spanish), and a virtual wellness voucher will be assigned to you.

According to Dr. Steven Santiago, Chief Medical Officer with Care Resource, “The key to preventing cardiovascular disease in your older years is managing your risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high total cholesterol or high blood glucose. The best way to find out is through screening tests during regular doctor visits. For many patients, screening results can serve as a wake-up call. Higher than optimal cholesterol or body mass index, for example, may drive home the message that it’s time to modify your diet and get more physical activity. When the test comes back and you see abnormal numbers, it becomes personal. Suddenly, the idea of making lifestyle changes isn’t just a recommendation.  It’s something that can impact your life and health.”

“It is important to have your blood glucose level checked. High blood glucose levels put you at greater risk of developing insulin resistance, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Untreated diabetes can lead to many serious medical problems including heart disease and stroke.” – Kathreen Kraus, MD, Primary Care Physician, Care Resource.

Residents of the U.S. are generally living longer these days, but more and more of them are developing chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, which will shorten their lives and boost medical costs. Some 133 million adults almost half the adult population now have a chronic health condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Such a statistic might lead you to think illness and impairment are synonymous with aging, however, growing old doesn’t have to bring disability and disease.  It’s never too late to start leading a healthier lifestyle. Even well into your 60s and 70s, one can take action to reduce their risk of developing chronic disease. The roadmap to healthy usually includes: living in an integrated society; maintaining a healthy diet and adequate exercise; pursuing the best possible education and lifetime learning; continuing to be involved in social and civic life; engaging in active career and job building and of course making adaptable housing choices; and remaining in control of one’s life.
