  2.  | March is Oral Health Month

oralhealth-march-pageheader

Normally the body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, certain medications – such as decongestants, antihistamines and painkillers can reduce saliva flow which washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, helping to protect you from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease. Studies also suggest that oral bacteria might play a role in some diseases. In addition, certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe.

This March, Care Resource is helping raise public awareness about good oral health. The focus is to seek out ways to improve public consciousness about bettering our community’s oral health-care habits.

This month, new clients without Dental Insurance can receive a free comprehensive oral exam, an oral health kit, a free panoramic x-ray and a free cleaning in the Broward County office located at 871 W Oakland Park Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

To redeem this promotion, one MUST first make an appointment. To make an appointment, call 305-576-1234 EXT: 470 (English) and 471 (Spanish).

DENTAL HEALTH 101

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your dental care routine. For a healthy mouth and smile, here are some recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes.
  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
