Community health screenings provide an opportunity for anyone to receive free or inexpensive health evaluations to help determine their risk of developing a medical conditions. Early detection and screenings improve patient health outcomes and reduce the costs of care.

With these considerations in mind, Care Resource is proud to work alongside community partnerships that allow for improvements in access to care in our South Florida community. On Saturday, July 9, from 8-11 AM, the Miami Beach Community Church located on 1620 Drexel Avenue is hosting a community health screening. Care Resource will be on site providing both HIV and Hepatitis C testing. Hepatitis C testing is available to those whom are uninsured.

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease affecting primarily the liver, caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The infection is often asymptomatic, but chronic infection can lead to scarring of the liver and ultimately to cirrhosis, which is generally apparent after many years. In some cases, those with cirrhosis will go on to develop liver failure or liver cancer. The word ‘hepatitis’ means inflammation of the liver. Toxins, certain drugs, heavy alcohol use, bacterial and viral infections can all cause hepatitis. Up to 5.3 million Americans have chronic Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C infection. About 75% of the infected population is unaware that they are even infected.

SaniqueOlkuch_screeningAccording to Sanique Olkuch, MSN, ARNP, FNP-BC, Nurse Practitioner with Care Resource, “Patients who have both HIV and Hepatitis C should definitely consider treatment. Co-infection is fairly common. The HIV and the Hepatitis together makes the disease progress more rapidly. People that are co-infected can be effectively treated.  However, since there are two infections to deal with managing them is more complicated. There is no cure for HIV, but it can be controlled.  Hepatitis C can be treated successfully.  Working closely with a one of Care Resource’s providers who specializes in managing co-infections will give you a chance for successful treatment.”
