CONGRESS TO ADDRESS THE HEALTH CENTER FUNDING CLIFF-header

MIAMI, FL.  (October 30, 2014) – Care Resource, a nonprofit organization and Federally Qualified Health Center serving residents in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties is asking the South Florida community to contact their Representative in Congress to act during the upcoming lame duck session to ensure the continued stability and viability of access to health care in thousands of communities nationwide.

The Health Centers Fund, which makes up more than half of all funding for the Health Centers program, will end unless it is reauthorized. This would mean that Health Centers, like Care Resource would see up to 70 percent reductions in grant funding, forcing reduction or elimination of health care access in some of the nation’s most vulnerable communities.  Funding for these centers was invested as part of the 2010 health reform law to expand the reach of health centers over five years so they could effectively cover the surge in demand for primary care.

According to Rick Siclari, CEO of Care Resource, “This could not come at a worse of a time because 62 million Americans still do not have access to a primary care provider. Moreover, if there is a shortfall in funding, health centers around the country would be unable to sustain current caseloads, sharply damaging primary care access for the insured and uninsured alike and more.”

The National Association of Community Health Centers recently stated in the “Economic and Community Impact of Federal Health Center Funding”, that in Florida alone, Federal Health Center funding generates $248, 435, 892 in both direct and non-direct economic activity to the state and 1, 903 jobs.

To take action, one can contact their Representative in Congress and ask them to address the Health Center funding cliff during the upcoming lame duck session as it is critical to ensuring that Health Centers remain able to serve the diverse needs of their communities, now and into the future. For one to contact their lawmaker, visit house.gov or senate.gov and insert their zip code or call the Capitol Hill switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
