Steven Santiago, M.D., Medical Director

Dr. Santiago was born and raised in New York City. He received his B.S. at City College of New York and his M.D. from the nearby State University of New York at Stony Brook Medical School. He did his residency in Family Practice at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Santiago became Board Certified in Family Practice in 1994 and was appointed as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1998.

Dr. Santiago has been the Medical Director at Care Resource, South Florida’s largest non-profit AIDS service organization, since 2003. Care Resource uses a unique “total care” approach, including working with affected communities to create and/or implement prevention strategies, community outreach and initiatives, testing, medical care, and protocols, as well as individual and family counseling and support services. This wide array of programs collectively strives to respond to every area of need of the HIV at-risk and infected communities. In addition, he directs the research program at Care Resource and he functions as principal investigator for numerous pharmaceutical and government sponsored HIV-related clinical trials.

Dr. Santiago has been an active member of the HIV education community, speaking frequently on numerous topics to patient groups and also to physicians and allied health professionals.

Robert B. Heglar, M.D., Associate Medical Director

Dr. Heglar joined our family full-time at Care Resource in June 2005 and trained in New York City at Montefiore Hospital after attending Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Heglar was an international and environmental lawyer in Washington, DC. He became interested in HIV medicine while doing volunteer work with the Whitman-Walker Clinic in DC and has worked directly in the HIV/AIDS community ever since. Dr. Heglar is board certified in family practice and accredited as an HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. He is the principal investigator for a number of clinical trials and is active in community education efforts.

Michael Cuenca, M.D., Primary Care Physician

Dr. Cuenca joined Care Resource in April 2006 and in his previous 3 years (from 2003-2006) Dr. Cuenca was the Medical Director of Community Health Care Center/One and Principal Investigator for a number of on-going studies since 2001. Currently he has 12 clinical trials. Previously he was the Medical Director of Clinic St. Christopher. He finished the Residency Program in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1999 where he served as Chief Resident. This is where he received the inspiration to take up HIV Medicine during the crucial period of 1996-1999 when AIDS changed from a grave and terminal illness to a chronic and manageable disease.

Dr. Cuenca is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine since 2003. He was born in the Philippines and grew up in Rhinebeck New York.

Klara Gershman, MD, Primary Care Physician

Dr. Gershman is a board eligible family practitioner who is committed to providing the utmost quality care for her patients. Originally from the Ukraine, Dr. Gershman came to Miami during her residency at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Gershman is known for her compassionate nature and is committed to improving the quality of life of her patients. Dr. Klara Gershman is a graduate of Bukovinian State Medical University and completed her residency at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital.  She is affiliated with South Miami Hospital and is board eligible by the American Board of Family Medicine.  Dr. Gershman is a Healthgrades Recognized Doctor.  In addition to English, she speaks Russian and Ukrainian and understands Spanish.

Manuel Casas, DMD, Dentist

Cuban born and raised, Dr Casas graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in 2007, receiving a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine degree). After three years of private practice in South Florida, he joined Nova as an adjunct professor to work in the newly created dental program at Care Resource. Subsequently becoming part of the agency’s staff he has helped in the development of the program combining clinical and teaching responsibilities. A Florida licensed dentist and a member of the American Academy of General Dentistry, he enjoys working in Care Resource’s diverse environment and the opportunity to serve and be involved with the community in his adoptive hometown.

Sanique T. Brown, MSN, ARNP, FNP-BC, Nurse Practitioner

Sanique was born in Jamaica and has lived in Florida since 1997. She received her B.A. in history and political science from University of Florida; her BSN from Florida Atlantic University and MSN from the University of Miami. She is currently a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Phi Beta Kappa Society and the American College of Nurse Practitioners. Sanique has passion for empowering her patients through education and enjoys caring for South Florida’s diverse population.

Daniel Fenton, DMD, Dentist

Dr. Fenton is a native South Floridian born and raised in Hollywood, FL. He attended the University of Florida on full academic scholarship where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2002. Dr. Fenton was one of five students selected to participate in Nova Southeastern University’s Masters of Biomedical Science program. Upon completion, he then attended NSU’s College of Dental Medicine and received his Dental Medicine Doctorate degree in May of 2010. Dr. Fenton is an extensively trained general dentist that specializes in Reconstructive Dentistry, Emergency Dentistry, Family Dentistry, and Implantology.

He is currently a standing member of the Florida Dental Association, American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, the Academy of Osteointegration, and the Psi Omega dental fraternity. The philosophy behind Dr. Fenton’s way of practice stems from sincere attention to the patient. Dr. Fenton aspires on making your next dental experience one you genuinely look forward to.
